LG introduces Tweet-TV and Glasses-Free 3D Mobile DTV at NAB

Love TV? Love Tweeter? Then this new LG concept is made for you! Introduced at NAB 2011, this TweeT-TV concept will allow you to get relevant Tweets or send tweets based on the TV program that you are watching on your smartphone. An interesting concept that advertiser will make sure to abuse to make your life a living hell.

Alongside Tweet-TV, LG also introduced for the second time at NAB a new Glasses-Free 3D mobile DTV that has been unveiled at CES earlier this year with its LG2161

The first mobile digital TV that displays 3D images broadcast via the ATSC Mobile DTV Standard is being demonstrated by LG Electronics at the 2011 NAB Show here this week. The prototype 7-inch receiver is designed with auto-stereoscopic capability that eliminates the need for special viewing glasses to see stunning 3D TV images.

LG also will show an innovative social network services application for the first time. Viewers engaged with Tweet-TV would be able to interact with program content and submit their comments on programs. The broadcaster consolidates the real-time comments and transmits those short messages with the video and audio, enabling a transparent conversational overlay. The application enables viewers to carry on an open discussion of program content or reply to questions that could be part of an audience quiz.

In addition, to show how local TV broadcasters can now offer more than just linear TV channels, LG Electronics is showing its first Android-enabled smartphone prototype equipped with Mobile Digital TV (MDTV) reception, which offers conditional access functionality for future subscription broadcasts and the capability of receiving “non-real time” data such as electronic coupons or “real-time” data reception with applications like Tweet-TV.

“The ATSC Mobile DTV standard offers broadcasters remarkable flexibility to address the changing demands of consumers and advertisers,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, president and chief technology officer, LG Electronics, Inc. “As broadcasters continue their national rollout of Mobile DTV, LG is proud to lead the transition with the latest innovations in mobile DTV services like 3D and applications like Tweet-TV and Electronic Coupons.”

The demonstrations are made possible through a cooperative effort with Harris Corporation, which has developed the necessary MDTV transmission equipment, and local DTV broadcasters KLAS-TV, 8 News NOW in Las Vegas. Roundbox, a leading mobile software provider, is providing non-real time data services that power the Smartphone coupon application, as well as the Electronic Services Guide (ESG) for all three of the innovative applications forATSC MDTV.

Tweet-TV with Mobile DTV

In collaboration with Roundbox, LG is demonstrating the new “Tweet-TV” mobile DTV application that will allow viewer “tweets” to be displayed interactively on a mobile DTVreceiver while a program is airing. A Harris MDTV transmitter will deliver viewer tweets that are received as data files and displayed in a transparent panel over a portion of the LG mobile DTV screen, aprototype version of an LG Android smartphone.

Glasses-Free 3D Mobile DTV

In the Las Vegas demonstration, the 3D signals are being internally transmitted at the Convention Center to receivers throughout the North Hall. Receiving the signal is LG's prototype receiver built around the LG2161 demodulator chip and LG-exclusive 3D formatting circuitry that combines the side-by-side left and right images for seamless viewing without the need for 3D eyewear commonly used for 3D TVs.

The seven-inch barrier-type LCD display shows lifelike 3D images that appear to jump right off the screen. With its built-in antenna, the device also receives conventional 2D 416×240 resolution MDTVbroadcasts and scales images up to 800×480 resolution. It also functions as an attractive digital photo frame when not being used as a Mobile DTVreceiver.

Electronic Coupons from your Smartphone

Non-real time services such as electronic couponing and video-on-demand are made possible by the versatile ATSC Mobile Digital TV standard now being deployed by broadcasters throughout the U.S. KLAS-TV 8 (RF channel 7) is transmitting digital coupons for electronics stores and restaurants during CES.

The smartphone prototype for both the Electronic Coupon and Tweet-TV demonstrations is LG's first full-touch CDMA device with built-in Mobile DTV circuitry. Running the Android 2.2 (Froyo) operating system and LG's second-generation MDTV chip, the fully-featured Smartphone includes a 3.2″ HVGA screen, 3 megapixel camera, GPS and Wi-Fi capability, and other features such as an accelerometer, digital compass, and ability to play back a variety of audio and video codecs.

Chips Available for Portable Device Manufacturers

Co-developer of the technology at the heart of the ATSC Mobile DTV Standard, LG Electronics is producing the critical component for Mobile DTV reception - the LG2161R single chip design that includes both the tuner and demodulator in a tiny seven-by-seven millimeter square package. This key component of mobile DTVreceivers already can be found in a variety of new products being introduced by various manufacturers this year for mobile DTV, from laptop USB accessoryreceivers to prototype netbooks with integrated mobile DTV tuners.

LG Optimus 2X “sold out” at launch

According to the UK distributor of LG's dual-core Optimus 2X Android phone, pent-up demand for the new mobile phone was so high it managed to sell out of its stock on launch day – with new stock yet to arrive.

Here's what Roy Taylor from the distributor said to Mobile:

“The LG Optimus 2X has been one of our most successful product launches of the year. We sold out in one day and are waiting more stock to satisfy customer demand”

It was all down to Ennio. We presume the above means the distributor is out of stock, but that individual retailers are likely to still have units available from their launch allocation.

LG Optimus 2X New Revolution of LG Smartphone

Through Optimus 2X, LG launch a mobile phone revolution by using dual-core processor in it. In addition, these products also have some interesting features, such as the GPU Tegra 2, the display is gorgeous, and 8-megapixel camera with video recording capability with 1080p resolution. Despite having a super-sophisticated facilities, but Optimus 2X LG display looks very simple. On  its body there is no logo of LG, which is only a Google name on the back.

4 inch screen size with exceptional color sharpness, at the front of this phone there is no physical button, which is only 4 touchpad with standard functions of Android is the Option, Home, Back and Search. Also provided an HDMI port which is located at the top, flanked with 3.5 mm jack and the Power button. While on the right side there are only two volume buttons, and there is no any button on the left side of the body.

Two speakers are placed at the bottom, it appears compatible with USB ports in between. Sound output through speakers also sounded good. Simply feels his stereo output. At the rear lies an 8-megapixel camera capable of capturing gamabr up to 3264x2448 pixel resolution. This phone also has a 1.4 megapixel camera placed in front. Outdoor shots are no doubt the quality, whereas when in poor lighting, need some penyesuaikan for more optimal.
To capture video, mobile, reinforced with Nvidia Tegra 2 is capable of recording up to 1920x1080 pixel resolution. Images are quite large for mobile phones in its class. But unfortunately, the video can only be recorded in 3gp format, not MP4 or other formats are more qualified. In addition there are some standard features that can be used in taking pictures, for example, White Balance, Color Effect, Scene modes, ISO settings and more.

Overall quality photos or videos looks good, but unfortunately there is no special button on the Optimus 2X camera.

LG Optimus Pad arriving in Japan before the US

The LG Optimus Pad, that was announced to reach our shores on the 20th of April, will be available in Japan first. Despite LG issuing the announcement in the US first, it looks like Japan will the ones who get to play with the Android tablet before us. The other interesting thing about the Japanese press release, as noticed by Crunch Gear, is that there is no mention of 3D at all in the press release, spec sheets or brochures. They do mention the dual 5.1 megapixel cameras, but the term 3D is not used at all. Could this mean that the Optimus Pad in Japan won't have 3D recording or output features that are present the American counterpart (the G-Slate)? I guess we'll have to wait and see. How important is it for you to have 3D on your mobile device?

LG WCP700 Wireless Charging Pad

Since portable devices like smart phones are designed for convenience first and foremost, other accessories that come with them should also follow suit. Tasks like charging these devices should also be developed to become even more convenient for users. LG may be offering such a convenience with its new WCP700 Wireless Charging Pad.

Wireless charging has recently caught the attention of many consumers. While still quite an early development, the new LG WCP700 Wireless Charging Pad is joining the fray of giving the convenient option of charging devices wirelessly. The new wireless charging pad charges devices via induction. Inductive coils built into battery doors and the internal contacts make a cord free charging possible.

The LG WCP700 Wireless Charging Pad also offers users the means to get visual, audible as well as tactile feedback to ensure that they place their gadgets or phones properly on the charging pad. Power indicators allow users to keep track on how much charge their phones may already be getting. The slim design of the charging pad also makes it easier to use and store as well. The LG WCP700 Wireless Charging Pad is set to be available in April of this year. It is expected to cost around US$70.

LG Optimus 3D Passes FCC with T-Mobile 3G Bands

We know AT&T is in the process of buying out T-Mobile for some $39 billion. We also know AT&T is getting their own version of the LG Optimus 3D under the LG Thrill 4G title. But could the newly acquired TMo network — the one already receiving the Optimus 2X as the T-Mobile G2x — get their own version of the glasses-free 3D handset? A new FCC filing is suggesting as much, as the LG P920, otherwise known as the Optimus 3D, has passed through the checks and standards board with AWS 3G bands at 1700MHz. That would happen to be TMo’s location on the network spectrum.

As mentioned before, T-Mobile has a good working history with LG, having already scored the G-Slate as an exclusive version of the Optimus Pad along with the dual-core G2x. We’d say it is likely we will see the Optimus 3D hit the magenta carrier. Will we possibly see it released as the myTouch 3D?
